Installation

Electric heating and hot water

Underfloor heating, immersion heaters, electric heaters and smart thermostats. Heating loads are the heaviest thing in most houses, and they're where cutting corners shows up first.

Electric underfloor heating

Electric underfloor heating is straightforward to install and very unforgiving of mistakes, because once the floor is down you cannot get at it.

  • The mat or cable is tested before, during and after the floor goes down — three times, not once
  • Its own circuit, correctly rated, with RCD protection
  • Floor sensor positioned so it reads the floor rather than the room, and in a conduit so it can be replaced without lifting tiles
  • Thermostat sited away from draughts and direct sun

The single most common failure we're called to is a heating mat damaged by a tiler or a floor fitter and only discovered after everything is grouted. Testing at each stage is what prevents it, and it takes minutes.

Wet underfloor systems are a plumber's job. We do the electrical side — the controls, pumps and wiring centre.

Immersion heaters and hot water

Immersion heaters are among the most common failures in a house, partly because they work hard and partly because they're often the original one.

  • Replacement elements and thermostats
  • Rewiring the supply where the existing cable or switch has suffered heat damage — very common, and worth catching early
  • Dual immersion and off-peak arrangements
  • Timers and controls so you aren't heating water all day

If your hot water has stopped and the cylinder is cold, it's usually the element or the thermostat, and it's usually a same-visit fix.

Electric heaters and thermostats

Panel heaters, storage heaters and towel rails, plus the controls that make them worth having.

  • Fixed heaters wired to their own circuit with a local isolator, not plugged in
  • Bathroom heating and towel rails, correctly zoned and rated
  • Smart thermostats and programmable controls, including replacing older wiring centres
  • Storage heater replacement and off-peak circuit work

Worth saying plainly: electric heating is expensive to run compared with gas, and no amount of clever controls changes that. Where it makes sense — an extension with no gas run, a garden office, a flat — we'll fit it properly. Where it doesn't, we'll say so.

Common questions

My hot water has stopped. Is that an electrician?

If it's an immersion heater, yes — usually the element or the thermostat, and usually fixed in one visit. If it's a boiler, that's a heating engineer.

Can you fit underfloor heating under any floor?

Most floor finishes are fine, but the build-up and the insulation underneath matter as much as the mat. Talk to us before the flooring is bought rather than after.

What if my underfloor heating has stopped working?

We can test the mat and tell you whether it's the mat, the sensor or the thermostat. Thermostats and sensors are replaceable; a damaged mat under a tiled floor is a much bigger conversation.

Will my consumer unit take an electric heating load?

Not always. Heating is one of the heaviest loads in a house, so we check the board and the supply before quoting rather than discovering it on the day.

Can you fit a smart thermostat I've bought?

Yes. Some need a neutral at the switch position and some don't — tell us the model and we'll confirm before you order.

Great electrician and a pleasure to have working in our home. Recently upgraded our bathrooms and needed some further electrical works for lights and fans. Craig came recommended and we were very happy with his work.

Craig did an excellent job for me. I had several lights and switches that were in need of attention. He quickly identified the problems, ordered the parts and did the job. He was very professional, neat and tidy.

We have used Craig many times over the years for anything electrical we need doing. He is always polite, punctual, professional and his work is of a very high standard. Very reasonably priced too.
