Windsor is about twenty minutes from Ascot and gives us some of the most interesting work we do. The town centre and the older streets around it contain a lot of period and listed property, plus a substantial number of flats and conversions above and behind commercial premises.
Older properties change the job considerably. Solid walls, lath and plaster, restricted floor access and conservation constraints all mean the cable route has to be worked out before anything else. Where a modern house is simply a matter of lifting a floor, a period house needs a plan — and sometimes a compromise between what is ideal and what can be achieved without damaging the fabric.
It also means being realistic. On a listed building, surface conduit in a discreet run is sometimes a better answer than chasing a wall that should not be chased. That is a conversation, not a decision to be made on the day.
