Crowthorne is about twenty minutes from Ascot, sitting in pine and heathland on the southern edge of Bracknell Forest. The village grew after the railway arrived, which left a stock of substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas, and later development filled in around them.
The older houses are the interesting ones electrically. Generous room sizes, solid walls, and installations that have usually been added to several times without ever being planned as a whole. Cable routes take thought, because chasing a solid wall in a house like that is a bigger undertaking than it looks.
The plots matter as much as the houses. Long gardens, mature trees and outbuildings mean a lot of what we do here is outside — supplies to garages, workshops and garden offices, and garden lighting along drives and paths. Damp, shaded ground and old buried cable are a poor combination, and exterior circuits are far and away the most common source of the intermittent RCD tripping we get called to in this area.
